Major Breakthrough in Investigating Illegal Sale of Personal Data in Pakistan
In a significant development, authorities in Islamabad have uncovered a troubling scheme involving the illegal sale of personal data of Pakistani citizens. A dedicated investigation has pinpointed 139 platforms allegedly linked to this illicit trade, sparking a wave of anticipated arrests and formal cases.
This extensive inquiry is being led by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). Their diligent work includes tracking down a variety of platforms involved, including 18 mobile apps, 17 websites, and even two YouTube channels, all reportedly profiting from selling personal data. Social media platforms have not escaped scrutiny, with 75 Facebook pages, 10 Instagram accounts, 12 Telegram channels, and 10 TikTok accounts all involved in this troubling racket.
What’s particularly concerning is the way some of these operators operated — using dedicated Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups to market their services openly, thus attracting buyers for stolen or leaked data. Sadly, in some cases, customers were also duped, as operators would take their money only to vanish or deliver false information. This manipulation exemplifies the urgent need for stringent cybersecurity measures.
The investigation ignited last year, following media reports by Express news that shone a light on this disturbing trend. After a recent report about another data leak, Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi demanded a comprehensive inquiry. His directive led to the formation of the SIT, tasked with completing the investigation swiftly. While they requested an extension of three weeks, the team has now successfully wrapped up significant portions of their work.
As the NCCIA prepares to transition into the next phase of the operation, they will soon file formal cases and likely initiate arrests. This moment signifies a critical step in safeguarding citizens’ data and holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
In a world increasingly driven by digital interactions, it’s essential to prioritize cybersecurity.
