Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government to Withdraw Cases Against PTI Protestors
In recent developments, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced plans to withdraw over 55 cases against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers linked to the protests that erupted on May 9 and 10. This decision follows a cabinet meeting, indicating a significant step toward resolving a contentious chapter in the region’s political landscape.
According to Advocate General Shah Faisal Utmankhel, a total of 319 cases were filed during the protests. Thankfully, many of those accused have either been acquitted or discharged due to a lack of substantial evidence. The 55 pending cases will be officially withdrawn once the cabinet meeting minutes are received. To facilitate this process, Additional Advocate General Inam Yousafzai has been appointed as a special prosecutor.
Interestingly, some of these cases didn’t invoke anti-terrorism clauses, and others have already seen resolutions after court responses were submitted. Among the cases related to the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 29 are still pending, while 23 have concluded with eight acquittals. The remaining cases were shifted to regular courts, pointing to the complexities of legal proceedings within this context.
Currently, there are six cases still hanging in the balance, with responses for one already filed, while the remaining five are still in progress. The government aims to file withdrawal applications and argue these in court, ensuring that no pending cases from the protests linger afterward.
Shifting focus, it’s important to note that as of Saturday, there are 416 terrorism cases pending across ten Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Peshawar alone is responsible for 192 of these cases across three courts. It’s worth mentioning that in November 2025, 100 cases were resolved across the province, showing that while the judiciary can sometimes seem slow, it is making headway.
The legal landscape in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remains dynamic, and it’s essential for citizens to stay informed about how these changes might affect them. Whether you’re directly involved or simply interested in the region’s political climate, understanding these developments can offer clarity during uncertain times.
