Successful Nationwide Anti-Polio Campaign in Pakistan
The final national anti-polio campaign of 2025 has wrapped up, and the results are impressive—over 44.6 million children vaccinated across Pakistan! This campaign, running from December 15 to December 21, represented a monumental step in the ongoing efforts to eradicate polio from the country.
The breakdown of vaccinations reveals some heartening numbers. Punjab led the charge with about 22.9 million children receiving the crucial polio drops. Meanwhile, Sindh contributed around 10.6 million vaccinations, followed by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with over 7.15 million and Balochistan with 2.58 million. Even in the federal capital of Islamabad, more than 450,000 children were vaccinated. The outreach extended further, with around 274,000 children in Gilgit-Baltistan and over 714,000 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir also receiving the vaccine.
What’s noteworthy about this year’s campaign is the significant progress against the polio virus itself. In 2025, Pakistan reported just 30 wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases—a notable drop from 74 cases in 2024, illustrating the effectiveness of these vaccination drives. The National Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) took a moment to commend the efforts of parents, local administrations, security forces, and, of course, the dedicated polio workers who braved challenges to bring this campaign to fruition. They emphasized that these individuals are the true heroes in this ongoing battle.
This collective effort shows a robust commitment to making Pakistan a polio-free nation. Authorities continue to stress the importance of sustained and coordinated efforts—because while we’ve made substantial strides, the journey isn’t over yet.
