Debunking the Myths: What’s Really Happening with Winter in Pakistan
As the winter months approach, it’s common for chatter about the weather to stir up some wild claims. Recently, rumors have circulated on social media and in mainstream outlets suggesting that Pakistan might brace itself for an unusually cold winter. However, the Met Office has stepped in to clarify these misconceptions.
On Tuesday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) officially dismissed these “unverified claims.” According to their statement, the existing seasonal winter forecast for the December-January-February period does not support predictions of extreme cold. This forecast is built upon robust data and observations, aligning closely with global climate indicators.
So, what does the PMD really say? They’ve indicated a likelihood of near-normal to slightly below-normal rainfall and slightly above-normal temperatures across most parts of the country. The observational data thus far backs this up, showing below-normal rainfall with only light to moderate precipitation mainly in the western and northwestern regions. Areas like Gilgit-Baltistan and Balochistan are expected to experience predominantly milder temperatures.
The PMD points out that their seasonal outlook—crafted with the help of the World Meteorological Organization—remains accurate. It’s encouraging everyone to rely on their official announcements for scientifically validated weather information rather than rumors that tend to spread like wildfire.
Interestingly, Karachi is set to see a drop in temperatures this weekend, with predictions of the mercury potentially hitting 9 degrees Celsius. PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaigham has advised that chilly nights will be the norm, allowing for colder conditions especially in the early morning. However, an important caveat was mentioned: while a cold wave was anticipated, the presence of upper-air troughs has kept the Siberian winds somewhat at bay. Once these winds become more active, a further dip in temperatures could indeed occur, intensifying the cold.
With the winter season still evolving, it’s crucial for everyone—be it residents or stakeholders—to stay informed through reliable channels like the PMD. Weather can be unpredictable, but staying informed is our best defense against the elements.
