Update on the Malir River Bridge Project: Ensuring Progress and Quality

Exciting developments are underway for Karachi’s Malir River Bridge, with Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah setting a new completion deadline of May 2026. Previously, the target was March 2026, but a review by the Planning and Development (P&D) Department revealed the need for an extension. With 65% of the physical construction completed and Rs. 3,006.690 million allocated to the project, there’s a lot to look forward to.

During recent technical briefings, it was confirmed that approximately 61.6% of the budget has been utilized. CM Shah emphasized the importance of quality over speed, stating that shortcuts won’t be tolerated in the project’s final phases. This sentiment is essential as we move closer to unveiling Karachi’s first bridge on the Malir River, which dates back to 1970.

The P&D team also conducted Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge, especially with ongoing challenges like utility relocations. CM Shah has specifically called on K-Electric to expedite the shift of their utilities, which has been a significant bottleneck. Additionally, he’s pushed for immediate procurement of gravel and aggregate materials to keep the supply chain smooth and constant.

And it doesn’t end there! Traffic concerns have been raised about the bridge’s capacity. Currently equipped with two lanes on each side, expansion to four lanes is critical for improving traffic flow and reducing commute times for Karachi’s residents. It’s a necessary step to accommodate the city’s growing population.

As we track this important project, it’s clear that proper planning and execution are key. Everyone involved—from government officials to construction teams—is playing a role in shaping better infrastructure for future generations.
