The Rising Costs of Hanami: A Look at Japan’s Cherry Blossom Tradition

Hanami, the beloved tradition of picnicking under cherry blossom trees, is more than just a cultural event in Japan; it’s a cherished pastime that brings families and friends together to celebrate spring. However, recent reports from the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute reveal that this year, the costs associated with hanami have surged by a staggering 25% since 2020. That’s a hefty increase that can put a damper on your spring festivities!

Every year, from late March to early April, parks throughout Japan become vibrant with families spreading blue tarps, unpacking bento boxes, snacks, and drinks while enjoying the stunning cherry blossoms. Unfortunately, the joy of this tradition isn’t immune to the effects of rising inflation. With global raw material prices escalating, food and beverage costs have followed suit, making it more challenging for families to enjoy the quintessential hanami experience.

So, what’s driving this price hike? Hideo Kumano, the chief economist at Dai-ichi Life, has put together an index to track the average price of 14 popular hanami items, such as rice balls, bento boxes, fried chicken, carbonated drinks, and even sweet buns. His findings indicate that sweet buns alone have skyrocketed by 46% since 2020, with carbonated drinks and rice balls also seeing increases of 45.7% and 45.0%, respectively. This steep rise is largely attributed to a weak yen and the ripple effects of global commodity prices.

Japan has seen its inflation rates climb, especially following economic disruptions such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has further strained supply chains and increased the costs of imported goods. Although core consumer inflation has hovered around the Bank of Japan’s 2% target, the experience of hanami is a reminder that some traditions can become more costly as economic pressures mount.

As families gather to enjoy picnics under the cherry trees this spring, it’s worth considering these rising costs. Finding cost-effective alternatives or planning ahead may help you enjoy hanami without breaking the bank.
