Bridging the Gap: AI as a Friend for Generation Z
Have you ever chatted with an AI and felt like you were talking to a friend? If you’re part of Generation Z, you’re not alone—in fact, a recent study by Kaspersky reveals that 27% of Gen Z users are doing just that. This marks a significant shift in how we perceive artificial intelligence. Once seen merely as a tool for tasks, AI is increasingly being embraced as a source of emotional support and companionship.
The global survey, which included 7,200 participants, showed that almost half of Gen Z engages with AI daily. Whether they’re seeking information (56%), studying (49%), or brainstorming ideas (47%), it’s clear that young people are integrating AI into their everyday lives. Interestingly, about 28% of them feel comfortable discussing personal issues with AI, which might be easier than sharing such matters with friends or family.
However, there’s a flip side. Despite their frequent interaction with AI, many Gen Z users are underestimating the potential risks. Only 42% reported regularly employing security measures like double-checking information or avoiding the sharing of confidential data. This lack of vigilance highlights a crucial gap in understanding: just because AI feels like a friend doesn’t mean it should be treated as a safe space for sensitive information.
Vladislav Tushkanov, a group manager at Kaspersky’s AI Technology Research Centre, emphasizes that while Gen Z is more adept at navigating the complexities of AI, personal connection should not blur the lines of privacy and reliability. He urges young users to maintain healthy skepticism, encouraging habits like verifying facts and safeguarding personal information.
As we move forward in this tech-driven era, it’s essential to strike a balance. AI can be an invaluable resource, helping with studies and personal challenges. However, treating these interactions wisely—with an understanding of the risks—is key to ensuring a positive experience.
