Lahore’s Efforts to Curb Bird-Related Aviation Hazards

In recent weeks, the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has ramped up its efforts to enhance aerial surveillance and digital mapping operations in Lahore and nearby sensitive areas. The aim? To tackle the growing threat posed by bird-related aviation hazards.

According to EPA officials, the Aerial Surveillance Force has been conducting reconnaissance flights over crucial sites, including Lahore Airport. The goal is to identify bird activity and nesting sites, particularly those that could endanger aircraft. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, they are geo-tagging nests and bird cages on digital maps for prompt removal. This e-mapping process is set to wrap up within a mere two days.

In their recent “Dening Report,” the EPA reported a targeted operation near Mehfooz Shaheed Garrison, resulting in the removal of 20 kite nests and 30 crow nests. Additionally, pigeon cages were dismantled at five different locations, including Baden Road and Gulshan Park.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the serious risk bird nests pose to aircraft safety. She urged residents to refrain from feeding birds in open areas or on rooftops, which only exacerbates the problem.

The district administration is also taking proactive measures by inspecting marriage halls, restaurants, and meat shops. In places like Nishat Colony and Arbab Market, four shopkeepers faced fines and had their premises sealed for maintaining open-air poultry and meat stalls, which attract birds.

Further, municipal teams have cleared excess branches and garbage from roads like Khurshid Alam Road, Javed Cheema Chowk, and Zarar Shaheed Road—eliminating potential bird nesting sites.

A recent effort by the provincial wildlife department led to the removal of an additional 15 kite nests and 20 crow nests from the PAF Golf Club. The next phase of operations is shifting from the Mehfooz Garrison towards the Harbanspura Ring Road.

The EPA is making a public appeal to avoid discarding leftover meat or sacrificial offerings in open spaces. Such practices not only invite birds but also significantly increase the risk of air accidents. The agency has warned that strict action will be taken against those who violate this directive.

By staying informed and cooperating with these initiatives, we can all contribute to making Lahore a safer place, especially when it comes to aviation safety.
