Understanding Pakistan’s Monsoon: Weather, Safety, and Preparedness

As the monsoon season unfolds across Pakistan, it brings both beauty and challenges. In the past 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported sadly that six more people have lost their lives due to rain and flood-related incidents. This highlights the urgent need for awareness and preparedness during this time.

Across Punjab and Balochistan, the inclement weather has caused various hazards such as flooding and collapsing roofs. Since the monsoon began on June 26, there have been a staggering 271 reported deaths and 655 injuries linked to rain-related events. It’s clear that while the rain can be refreshing, it also poses serious risks.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts more rain in cities like Karachi, where light drizzles are expected over the next few days, accompanied by stronger sea breezes. Daytime temperatures are likely to hover between 33°C and 35°C, with humidity climbing up to 80% in the mornings. We need to stay hydrated and be mindful of our surroundings.

In Sindh, although hot and humid weather is dominant, specific districts like Tando Allahyar and Tharparkar may see thunderstorms and rainfall. Meanwhile, areas like Guddu and Sukkur continue to experience low-level flooding due to heavy rains in the north.

With a new westerly wave set to impact the weather starting Tuesday, risks of urban flooding in low-lying areas and potential landslides in hilly regions remain high. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has issued flood alerts, especially for the Chenab and Jhelum rivers, preparing for possible medium-level flooding.

So, how can we stay safe during this season? It starts with staying informed. Keep an eye on weather updates, understand local flood zones, and prepare emergency kits. Additionally, local authorities, such as Rescue 1122 teams, are on high alert. Let’s support each other in these challenging times.
