The Green Future of Dubai: Volunteering and Environmental Initiatives

Dubai is not just known for its stunning skyscrapers and luxury lifestyle; it’s also making remarkable strides in environmental sustainability. One of the shining examples comes from the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), which launched a series of events aimed at boosting our green efforts. From February 2023 to February 2025, DEWA collaborated with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group to plant an impressive 13,350 mangrove trees at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary.

Over 1,650 volunteers, including DEWA employees, their families, and students from DEWA Academy, joined this initiative. Together, they logged 3,626 hours of service! The community involvement isn’t just heartwarming; it yields tangible results. The campaigns garnered happiness scores of 92.9% in 2023 and 94.3% in 2024, showcasing DEWA’s dedication to enhancing mangrove sustainability.

But that’s not all. DEWA also removed around 3,546 kilograms of plastic waste and cleared eight tonnes of algae and seaweed from the beach. These actions highlight the agency’s commitment not just to plant but also to preserve our precious coastal areas.

As DEWA’s MD & CEO, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, mentioned, “Our social responsibility drives us to encourage the community to support nature-based solutions that combat climate change.” Their efforts align with the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, which include ensuring access to clean water and protecting marine life. With aspirations to contribute to the national initiative of planting 100 million mangrove trees in the UAE by 2030, DEWA is paving a greener path for the future.
