Prime Minister’s Support for Flood-Affected Communities: A Unified Effort
In a heartfelt move, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that members of the federal cabinet will be donating one month’s salary to lift up the flood-affected communities in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). This commitment came during a meeting in Islamabad, where he reviewed ongoing relief efforts in the flood-hit regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The prime minister emphasized that aiding our distressed fellow citizens is a collective national responsibility. Under his relief package, families of those who lost their lives and individuals affected by the floods are set to receive vital financial assistance. To ensure everything runs smoothly, Kashmir and G-B Affairs Minister Engineer Amir Muqam has been tasked with overseeing the relief and rehabilitation operations.
Shehbaz Sharif didn’t stop there; he instructed federal ministers to take a hands-on approach, remaining in affected areas until every individual receives the help they need. Restoration of essential services like electricity, water supply, and roads is a priority, and he directed the National Highway Authority and other relevant bodies to focus on repairing critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, medical teams are being sent to establish camps, and the Benazir Income Support Programme is being mobilized to provide additional aid to those in distress. So far, a remarkable 456 relief camps have been established, along with 400 rescue operations conducted by the federal and provincial governments, the Pakistan Army, and numerous other organizations.
The damage from the severe flooding is staggering, with preliminary estimates revealing losses exceeding Rs126 million. The National Disaster Management Authority has provided a detailed report that highlights the urgent need for ration packs, tents, medicines, and more. Prime Minister Sharif has called for an increase in the relief items distributed as monsoon rains are expected to continue, potentially exacerbating the situation until late September.
