Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Ongoing Battle: Repairing Flood-Damaged Roads and Bridges

The heavy downpours and flash floods recently gripping Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) have left the province reeling from destruction, prompting the Communications and Works Department to estimate a staggering Rs 9.45 billion for road and bridge repairs. These rains, which occurred from August 15 to 22, have led to tragic casualties—at least 393 lives lost, over 190 injured, and thousands of homes damaged.

In total, 331 roads across the province have taken a hit at 336 different points, amounting to roughly 493 kilometers of severely damaged infrastructure. While 229 roads have partially reopened for traffic, and 50 have seen full restoration, it’s clear that the journey to normalcy will take time, with 57 roads remaining entirely inaccessible.

Buner has emerged as the district with the highest toll, reporting 234 fatalities. Similarly, the district of Swat saw its roads washed out, leaving 79 roads damaged at 80 points, contributing to a costly rehabilitation effort that has already surged past Rs 450 million. With three roads fully reopened and many more partially cleared, there is still much more work to be done.

The flooding has also dismantled 32 bridges in K-P, with only one bridge fully operational again. The estimated cost to restore these critical structures stands at Rs 1.12 billion. Rehabilitation efforts are focused on areas that are vital for connectivity, especially in hard-hit regions like Swabi, which also reported significant road damage.

These intense rains aren’t just a one-off event. Pakistan faces the harsh reality of climate change, making such extreme weather increasingly frequent and severe. As a result, the monsoon season, which runs from June to September, often brings with it devastating flash floods and landslides. Last year, the situation was dire, with monsoon floods leading to substantial loss of life and damage.

As recovery efforts proceed, the resilience and determination of the people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa shine through despite the obstacles.
