Preparing for Potential Floods in Sindh: A Call to Action

Flooding is a reality that communities often have to face, and it’s especially pressing for Sindh right now. Recently, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah toured the Guddu Barrage with senior ministers and security officials to assess the situation. They’re getting ready for a super flood that could reach staggering levels of 900,000 cusecs—something that could completely submerge vulnerable areas.

During his visit, Shah arrived by helicopter to evaluate the river flow and mapped out potential flood zones. He expressed cautious optimism but also stressed the importance of preparation. “Although we hope such high volumes will not reach here, we are still preparing for a super flood,” he mentioned, highlighting the fact that they are not taking any chances.

The provincial administration is already coordinating evacuation plans for riverine settlements. They’ve gathered detailed maps of populations, livestock, and more to ensure a smooth evacuation if necessary. The collaboration with the Pakistan Navy, Army, and Rangers has been significant. They’re deploying boats in at-risk areas and are fully focused on preventing loss of life and livestock.

One of the challenges they face is the difference in terrain between Sindh and Punjab. While Punjab has breaching points that allow excess water to flow back into the river quickly, Sindh’s lower terrain complicates this process. Chief Minister Shah emphasized the urgent need to protect embankments, especially in vulnerable areas like the KK Bund and Shahin Bund. If flood levels hit those dangerous highs, the structural integrity of these embankments could be severely compromised.

Fortunately, they have a bit of time to prepare since water from Trimmu is still several days away from Sindh. Shah urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with local authorities to ensure safety if evacuation becomes necessary.
