PTI’s Bold Move: Boycotting Assembly Sessions Amidst Unrest

In a significant political development, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to boycott National Assembly sessions. Chairman Barrister Gohar made this announcement in Islamabad, expressing displeasure over the treatment of PTI lawmakers. "From now on, we will not attend National Assembly sittings. We will protest and boycott instead," he stated during a press briefing.

This decision comes after PTI’s parliamentary party convened at the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) House, where they reiterated their positions and gave their full support to their leader’s directive. Gohar criticized the authorities, alleging that they had stripped PTI legislators of their seats and attempted to silence them. “Even our attempts to celebrate Independence Day have been thwarted,” he lamented. “Despite numerous challenges, we attended sessions to voice our demands democratically, but we are met with obstruction.”

In the same breath, former speaker Asad Qaiser highlighted a pressing issue: the plight of flood victims in K-P. "Our government is striving to support those who have suffered," he said. Qaiser called on the federal government to step in and assist the flood-hit populations while urging the United Nations to provide necessary aid. The devastation from recent heavy rains has been catastrophic, particularly in regions like Buner, Shangla, Swabi, and Swat. K-P Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur reported a flood surge of 12 to 14 feet and noted that about 490 lives have been lost.

As the situation unfolds, compensation efforts are in place. Families of the deceased are receiving Rs2 million, while those who lost their homes can receive Rs1 million. However, Gandapur candidly pointed out that this support, while timely, is insufficient for true recovery. “This is only support – you cannot rebuild a house with Rs1 million,” he remarked, noting that, historically, relief efforts have never been deployed so swiftly.
