Addressing Instability in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: A Call for Dialogue and Development
In a recent address at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur shed light on a pressing issue: the impact of Afghanistan’s instability on provincial peace and security. He emphasized the necessity of dialogue with Kabul, articulating that long-term solutions require collaboration rather than confrontation.
Gandapur expressed profound gratitude for the sacrifices made by the armed forces, police, and civilians in combating terrorism, stating, "We salute the martyrs who laid down their lives for peace." He believes that negotiating with Afghanistan is essential for sustainable peace—a sentiment echoed by the federal government’s support for his proposal.
During the meeting, attended by senior officials from various departments, Gandapur highlighted the province’s abundant natural resources, which have often been underutilized. He mentioned that upon taking office, K-P was grappling with significant financial and security challenges. However, through smart economic strategies, the current government has fostered a model of self-reliance, leading to billions in additional revenue over just 19 months.
An intriguing point he raised was K-P’s vast hydropower potential. The provincial government is making substantial investments to harness this resource for industrial development, coupled with ongoing efforts to establish a dedicated transmission line for affordable electricity. This initiative aims to boost local industries and create new job opportunities.
Tourism, too, is on the agenda. Gandapur noted that K-P is working to develop integrated tourism zones that adhere to international standards, which could significantly enhance provincial revenue. The government’s focus on agriculture, livestock, and a newly introduced Mountain Agriculture Policy will support rural employment and farming in the region’s hilly areas.
On governance, transparency, and digital service delivery are high on his priority list. With 29 sectors already digitalized, the provincial administration is keen on embracing technology to improve efficiency and transparency.
Regarding Afghan refugees, Gandapur acknowledged K-P’s long-standing role as host, reiterating that their repatriation is a federal matter but must be handled with dignity and respect. He also voiced concerns over unfulfilled promises concerning the merged districts, advocating for a new NFC Award to ensure fair resource distribution for K-P.
In terms of public welfare, the Chief Minister proudly announced that every resident now has access to the Sehat Card, which provides free medical treatment. Additionally, initiatives like interest-free loans for home construction and support for youth startups have been rolled out to promote economic empowerment.
In conclusion, the challenges facing Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are significant, but with a focus on dialogue, development, and effective governance, there is hope for a brighter future.
