Understanding Recent River Flows in Punjab: What You Need to Know

If you live in Punjab or keep an eye on the region’s weather patterns, you might be curious about the current state of our rivers. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) recently shared some important updates regarding river flows that are worth discussing.

According to the PDMA’s report, the overall water flow in Punjab’s rivers remains stable, which is good news for both agriculture and local communities. However, two locations on the Sutlej River are experiencing low to medium-level flooding. It’s crucial for residents near these areas to stay informed and be cautious about any potential changes in water levels.

So, what’s happening with the River Ravi? The good news is that it’s flowing normally across all major points. For instance, at Jassar, water flow has been recorded at 20,000 cusecs, while Shahdara has seen 22,000 cusecs. The Balloki Headworks is a bit busier, with a flow of 43,000 cusecs, and Sidhnai Headworks is at 46,000 cusecs. These consistent water flows are essential for irrigation and maintaining eco-balance in the area.

On the Sutlej River, it’s a different story. At Ganda Singh Wala, we have a medium-level flood with a discharge of 108,000 cusecs, and Sulemanki Headworks is facing a low-level flood at 81,000 cusecs. Residents near these areas should remain alert as conditions can change rapidly.

Moving on to the River Chenab, it’s currently flowing within normal limits as well. At Marala, the flow is at 57,000 cusecs; Qadirabad registered 70,000 cusecs, and Khanki Headworks reported 75,000 cusecs of water. The Trimmu Headworks is seeing a lower flow of 9,000 cusecs, and Panjnad reported 28,000 cusecs. This data helps in water management and flood prevention strategies, crucial as we head into the rainy season.

Staying informed about the state of our rivers not only helps us understand the immediate environment but also prepares us for any future weather-related events. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for continued normal flows and minimal flooding.
