Karachi’s Ongoing Battle with Dangerous Buildings: What You Need to Know

In recent days, the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has ramped up its efforts to tackle the alarming number of dangerous buildings in Karachi. Did you know that over 500 structures citywide have been flagged as unsafe? Among these, 106 are concentrated in District South alone. This issue is more than just a statistic; it represents real concerns for residents living in close proximity to these structures.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, workers have taken to demolishing precarious buildings, particularly in densely populated areas like Lyari and Agra Taj Colony. Rehan Khan, the SBCA Demolition Director, mentioned that this first phase of demolition is being carried out with extreme care. In fact, they’re using manual methods rather than heavy machinery in order to prevent any collateral damage to surrounding homes. So far, one floor of a seven-story building in Lyari has been demolished, with efforts continuing on the remaining floors.

The SBCA aims to complete this demolition work before winter to minimize the risk of tragic accidents similar to the disaster in July, where a five-story building collapse tragically claimed 27 lives in the Baghdadi area.

In addition to the broader demolition efforts, the SBCA is also focused on urgent evacuations. Just recently, two more buildings were emptied as a safety measure. They are especially cautious, as many of these structures are dangerously close to occupied homes.

Another significant aspect of this ongoing drive is the demolition of the Yasir Terrace residential project in Gulistan-e-Jauhar. After facing delays due to local protests, this building is set to see action as part of the broader cleanup.

On a related note, the operation to remove structures in Afghan Basti has been underway for several days now. Over 1,200 buildings have been cleared as part of a drive involving various governmental bodies, underscoring the multi-faceted challenges involved in repatriating Afghan refugees living there.

As this situation continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining our urban environments. If you’re in or around Karachi, stay informed about what’s happening in your neighborhood. The SBCA’s proactive measures are crucial steps toward ensuring safety for all.
