Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Constitutional Concerns and Public Transport Enhancements
Recently, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Chief Minister, Sohail Afridi, made headlines with his outspoken critique of the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment. He firmly believes this amendment is an attempt to undermine the Constitution, particularly by a government he claims is operating without a genuine mandate. During a visit to Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service, Afridi addressed reporters, underscoring his stance that a government formed on the basis of a “rigged election” should not be allowed to alter a foundational national document. He argued that with only 17 legitimate seats in the National Assembly, the current ruling coalition lacks the authority to propose such significant changes.
The proposed amendment, tabled by the PML-N led federal government, suggests notable alterations, including the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court. Opposition parties, including Afridi’s own Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), are voicing strong objections. They fear these changes could jeopardize the nation’s very stability, echoing concerns that widespread electoral fraud was employed to limit PTI’s capacity to govern.
In a related move, Afridi announced a grand jirga set for November 12, aiming to unite key political figures to explore solutions for eradicating terrorism and achieving lasting peace. This initiative underscores the importance of cooperation among lawmakers and former parliamentarians to foster stability in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
On a more uplifting note, Afridi highlighted the expansion of the BRT service, a project he proudly termed a gift from PTI founder Imran Khan. The service is set to extend to Jamrud Tedi Bazaar and Bara Bazaar, improving transit access for residents. To alleviate overcrowding, his government is purchasing new buses, aiming for a smarter, more efficient transportation network.
