The Burden of Responsibility: Kashmir’s Ongoing Struggle

Kashmir’s history is filled with a rich tapestry of culture and conflict, and the ongoing freedom movement is a significant chapter that continues to unfold. Recently, Dr. Syed Nazir Gilani, the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights, voiced some critical insights about the current state of affairs in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

In a candid conversation, Dr. Gilani pointed out that the AJK government has not effectively embraced its responsibilities regarding the Kashmir dispute. He emphasized that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are the primary stakeholders in the ongoing plebiscite, with Pakistan playing a pivotal role as the secondary party.

One of his key arguments revolves around the 1974 Act, which he describes as a process that effectively annexed AJK to Pakistan. However, he lamented that the AJK government has "miserably failed" to extend this sense of unity to the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Dr. Gilani highlighted an essential strategy that could have changed the game entirely. He stated that if the AJK government had succeeded in uniting all communities within IIOJK—Kashmiri Pandits, Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists—around the fundamental demand for self-determination, it could have provided a more substantial basis for political change. The resultant unity would not only have solidified Pakistan’s stance but could also have been a turning point for the region, reflected in a potentially favorable plebiscite vote.

Sadly, Dr. Gilani remarked on the shortcomings of the AJK government in not only addressing the plight of IIOJK but also in fostering a deeper connection between the Kashmiris and Pakistan. The need for a responsible, unifying approach is more critical now than ever.
