Devastating Flash Floods in Gilgit: A Call for Awareness and Safety
In recent days, the enchanting Babusar Pass area in Gilgit’s Ghizer district faced a heart-wrenching tragedy. A flash flood swept away eight tourist vehicles, tragically claiming at least three lives and leaving over 15 individuals missing. This disaster serves as a grim reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness, especially for those exploring mountainous regions.
According to reports, the sudden rise in water levels led to massive landslides and flooding, affecting the Babusar road which is a popular route for many travelers. As the floodwaters surged, these vehicles filled with tourists were caught in a perilous situation. Luckily, rescue teams managed to save four individuals, but the heartbreaking news of three fatalities emerged from the wreckage. With over 15 people still unaccounted for, search operations are in full swing.
Faizullah Faraq, a spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, shared that one of the rescued tourists is in critical condition. The region’s communication systems were drastically affected, leaving thousands of stranded tourists unable to contact their families. "Our communication network has taken a significant hit," Faraq noted. Nevertheless, the resilience of local residents shone through, as they stepped in to provide shelter to those in need.
Amidst this chaos, the Gilgit-Baltistan government has rallied resources to assist in rescue operations and provide aid to affected areas. Local authorities are coordinating with nearby communities, ensuring that shelter and emergency assistance are available for stranded tourists.
This catastrophic event wasn’t isolated. In the nearby Swat district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, five children tragically lost their lives due to rain-induced accidents. Three died when a roof collapsed, while two others were swept away by a rainwater drain. The Chief Minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa expressed deep sorrow, assuring that the provincial government stands with the grieving families during this sorrowful time.
