Celebrating Progress: The Sindh Government’s Journey Under PPP Leadership
In a recent presentation at Awan-e-Sadr, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari proudly showcased the accomplishments of Sindh’s government since 2008. His report emphasized notable advancements in healthcare, education, poverty alleviation, and infrastructure—demonstrating significant strides made in the province despite common misconceptions.
Bilawal pointed out that Sindh is often seen as a "glass half empty," but he firmly believes the PPP-led government has worked tirelessly to improve service delivery and strengthen institutions. For instance, he highlighted the quadrupling of healthcare budget allocations, increasing from 2.9% to nearly 10%. Major hospitals, such as the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, are expanding to accommodate a growing number of patients—aiming for a total of 3,100 beds by 2028.
The education sector also saw uplifting changes, with the number of public universities growing from 10 to 30, catering to a rising demand for higher education. Bilawal mentioned the Sindh Rural Support Organisation (SRSO), which has helped lift 1.4 million women out of poverty through accessible loans, showcasing the government’s commitment to socio-economic development.
Additionally, the Sindh government is tackling recent challenges such as the destruction caused by floods in 2022. Their ambitious housing initiative to construct 2.1 million climate-resilient homes has already created around one million jobs, significantly contributing to poverty alleviation.
Moreover, Sindh’s rich agriculture sector has experienced a resurgence, with farmers benefiting from substantial support packages that have resulted in impressive wheat harvests in recent years, even post-flood.
Bilawal also discussed the province’s developments in energy and public transport, stating that advancements in wind and solar energy position Sindh as a potential leader in renewable energy generation. With over 24,000 kilometers of newly constructed roads and the introduction of electric buses, the government is reshaping the transportation landscape.
In discussing fiscal challenges, Bilawal proposed devolving the collection of sales tax on goods to the provinces, arguing that local authorities can better bridge the federal fiscal gap based on their impressive revenue performance in recent years.
This gathering at the Presidency brought together influential figures, including Acting President Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and members of the Sindh cabinet, emphasizing the collaborative effort required to continue this progress.
As we reflect on Sindh’s remarkable journey under the PPP, it’s clear that positive change is possible when focused leadership meets the needs of its people.
