Tragic Capsizing Incident in Gwadar: A Community in Mourning
Recently, a tragic incident struck the fishing community near Gwadar when a boat carrying six fishermen capsized in the rough waters of the Arabian Sea. Authorities recovered four bodies, raising the total death toll to five. Among those lost was Ayub, a fisher from Ibrahim Hyderi, whose family is now grappling with the heavy burden of grief. His son, Zeeshan, is among the deceased and is expected to return to Karachi by Monday night for burial.
The fishing community is no stranger to peril. It’s a daily struggle where the thin line between survival and disaster hangs in the balance. The Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum’s media coordinator, Kamal Shah, reported that one fisherman managed to survive, offering a glimmer of hope amidst a heartbreaking loss.
At Ayub’s funeral, PFF Chairman Mehran Ali Shah emphasized the risks fishermen face every day. “When they cannot fish, they confront hunger and poverty,” he lamented. It’s more than just a loss of life; it’s the disruption of families and livelihoods.
In response to this tragedy, Shah urged the Sindh government to take immediate action by establishing rescue centers along the coast. He highlighted the need for speedboats to ensure swift emergency responses, a crucial step in keeping the fishing community safe. Moreover, with Sindh’s fishermen contributing over Rs24 billion in taxes annually, Shah called for the government to prioritize their safety and well-being.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of those who brave the sea to provide for their families. As we extend our condolences to the affected families, let’s also consider ways to support and uplift this community.
