The Islamabad Model Jail: A New Era for Incarceration
After years of anticipation, the Islamabad Model Jail is gearing up to open its doors in a phased manner, with the first phase expected to kick off by the end of August. This new facility, located on 90 acres in Sector H-16/2, aims to address overcrowding issues in existing jails, particularly Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
What’s exciting about this model jail? Once it’s fully operational, it will house around 2,000 inmates, complete with separate accommodations for women and juvenile detainees. Facilities like a school for staff children, a 22-bed hospital, and even places of worship including a mosque and a church make it a more human-centered approach to incarceration. It appears to be designed not just for punishment, but also for rehabilitation.
Originally projected to cost Rs3.9 billion, the expenses have skyrocketed to over Rs18.2 billion due to delays and rising construction material prices. Nonetheless, this facility aims to modernize the prison system in Pakistan and alleviate the severe overcrowding situation at Adiala Jail, which currently holds around 7,500 inmates despite a capacity of just 3,500.
As preparations continue, the Ministry of Interior is working tirelessly to ensure that everything from security staff to medical personnel is in place by launch time. They are looking to appoint key personnel like the jail superintendent and his assistants by mid-August, and special prison vans are being readied too.
While this new facility is a step in the right direction, it may not solve the overcrowding problems entirely. Even after relocating 2,000 inmates, it’s likely that Adiala Jail will fill back up quickly. Still, the Islamabad Model Jail represents hope for a more structured and humane approach to incarceration in the capital.
