Tackling Smog in Lahore: Latest Actions by the EPA
Smog is not just a seasonal inconvenience; it’s a serious health crisis that affects millions. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took significant steps in battling this issue, submitting a comprehensive report to the Lahore High Court detailing enforcement actions against pollution offenders.
According to the report, the EPA has taken robust measures, demolishing 41 industrial units and nine brick kilns, which were flagged as major polluters. In addition, 81 industrial units, 41 restaurants, and another five brick kilns were sealed for failing to meet environmental standards. This could mark a turning point in Lahore’s fight against the toxic haze that blankets the city during the colder months.
As if that wasn’t enough, cases were registered against 39 industrial units and 70 brick kiln owners, emphasizing the EPA’s commitment to accountability. In total, fines amounted to a staggering Rs171 million—Rs100 million from industrial units and Rs71 million from brick kilns. The Lahore High Court had previously mandated strict actions to curb environmental degradation, and the EPA is clearly taking these directives seriously.
It’s also important to note that Punjab’s government has initiated several proactive measures, from deploying anti-smog guns to enforcing crackdowns on smoke-belching vehicles and industries. Alongside banning tree cutting, these actions aim to reduce the smog’s effects significantly.
However, the problem remains critical. Estimates show that over 20 million people across Punjab faced health issues related to smog as of 2025. Lahore, hit hardest, saw over 600,000 residents seeking medical treatment for smog-related illnesses. Other cities like Faisalabad and Multan reported alarmingly high numbers too, collectively tallying over 1.8 million cases.
It’s evident that we can’t afford to ignore this crisis. The EPA’s recent actions give us hope that things might improve—after all, clean air is a basic human right.
