Tensions Rise in Gilgit Following Attacks on Prominent Figures

Panic swept through Gilgit on Sunday as two violent attacks targeted respected leaders, igniting fear among residents. Gunmen struck at prominent cleric Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmed and Chief Court Judge Malik Inayatur Rehman, resulting in injuries for five individuals and forcing many businesses to shut their doors.

Interior Minister Shams Lone reported that Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmed, the head of the Ahle Sunnat wal Jamaat, was shot near the Police Headquarters along with his driver and two security personnel. Fortunately, all injured parties are now in stable condition. Meanwhile, the second attack unfolded near City Hospital, where Judge Rehman’s vehicle was peppered with bullets. Luckily, he emerged unscathed.

Minister Lone emphasized that “no one will be allowed to disrupt peace in Gilgit-Baltistan,” vowing to track down those responsible and serve justice. Government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq decried the assault on Qazi Nisar as a “cowardly attempt to drag the region into chaos,” underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining stability.

In the aftermath of the attacks, residents expressed their anger and fear. Protesters took to the streets, blocking roads and demanding immediate action against the perpetrators. Tensions escalated further, leading to the suspension of intercity traffic between Gilgit and Islamabad due to heightened security.

The community response was swift, with young people from various backgrounds joining forces to denounce the violence. Social media buzzed with indignation as users condemned the attacks and called for a robust response, highlighting an urgent desire for peace in the region.

A senior police officer verified that the attackers fled in two abandoned vehicles, complicating the investigation. Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan and Governor Syed Mehdi Shah strongly condemned the actions, labeling them a “conspiracy to destabilize peace” and instructing law enforcement to act swiftly.

As residents of Gilgit navigate this unsettling time, the collective hope is for a return to tranquility and justice. Community solidarity remains crucial, and now more than ever, it’s essential to support one another.
