Major Infrastructure Developments in Pakistan: What You Need to Know
The landscape of transportation in Pakistan is set for a significant transformation. Starting next July, groundwork will commence on the vital Karachi-Rohri segment of the Karachi-Peshawar mainline (ML-1). This upgrade is part of an ambitious project backed by a $2 billion funding package from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The goal? To enhance transportation efficiency, particularly for the multi-billion-dollar Reko Diq Copper and Gold Project, and aim for completion by December 2028.
During a recent review meeting, Planning Minister Professor Ahsan Iqbal stressed the importance of timely execution and quality assurance in these public sector projects. The meeting reviewed crucial interventions under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2025-26, focusing on both railways and highways. One standout initiative is the much-anticipated Thar Coal Railway Connectivity Project, which will require an investment of approximately Rs53.7 billion and improve logistics for energy supply.
As projects evolve, the government plans a thorough assessment of funds required over the next three years. In total, there are 71 highway projects under the NHA’s portfolio, estimated to cost Rs3,407 billion. The need for efficient infrastructure has never been greater, and with a focus on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), there’s a clear push to prioritize roads like the Sambrial-Kharian-Rawalpindi motorway.
In addition to transportation, the meeting also highlighted impactful water-sector initiatives, including major hydropower projects and the K-IV water supply Project for Karachi. Together, these projects represent an investment totaling Rs1,848 billion and reflect a broader commitment to improving essential services and infrastructure across the country.
As these projects move forward, they offer a glimpse into a more connected and efficient Pakistan. If you’re keen to stay updated on these developments and more, connecting with platforms like Pro21st can provide you with valuable insights and resources. Stay tuned!
