Heavy Rainfall and Flooding: What You Need to Know

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recently issued a warning about heavy rainfall expected over the next couple of days in various regions, including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, and Lahore. This rainfall, along with anticipated intermittent showers in Peshawar and surrounding areas, has raised concerns about rising river inflows, particularly in upper catchment areas. Increased flows could lead to fresh flooding, so it’s important to stay vigilant.

Currently, river conditions show mixed signals. The Guddu Barrage is experiencing a medium-level flow of 500,000 cusecs, while the Sukkur Barrage is at higher levels, reaching 571,000 cusecs. Kotri Barrage is also at medium-level flow with a possible flood risk looming. Though water levels in major rivers like the Indus and Jhelum have returned to normal, areas like Ganda Singh Wala are still facing medium floods, and low floods remain at Sulaimanki.

As many communities are already affected, the statistics are alarming. Over 4.7 million people have been impacted, leading to the devastation of more than 4,700 villages. Relief efforts are ongoing, with 329 relief camps and 425 medical camps established to assist those in need. Additionally, around 2.09 million animals have been relocated to safer areas.

Stay Informed and Safe

Residents in flood-prone zones are advised to avoid risky areas—crossing rivers or submerged roads could endanger lives. The NDMA encourages everyone to stay updated through media alerts and to utilize the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert app for timely notifications.

Furthermore, the Punjab Health and Population Department is actively engaged in delivering essential medical services. They have treated over 822,000 flood victims, providing necessary care, including medical camps and hygiene kits. The commitment to ensuring health and safety for those affected remains strong.

Conclusion

With the weather conditions changing rapidly, it’s crucial to stay alert and informed. The response teams are working tirelessly to manage the situation, but your awareness and precautions can significantly contribute to safety in these challenging times.
