Heavy Rainfall in Islamabad: What You Need to Know
Recently, Islamabad experienced a deluge that caused significant urban flooding, damaging homes and stranding residents. Authorities were quick to issue high alerts as water levels surged in key areas, particularly in Rawalpindi. According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Rawalpindi, neighborhoods like Saidpur faced an astonishing 145mm of rainfall in just 3.5 hours, leading to flash floods.
A wall collapse in Saidpur further exacerbated the situation, creating hazardous conditions where streets and homes were submerged. While some social media chatter labeled it a cloudburst, officials clarified that, according to their measurements, a true cloudburst hadn’t occurred, though the intensity was undeniable.
In nearby Rawalpindi, the water levels in Nullah Leh also spiked, prompting WASA to declare a rain emergency and mobilize emergency teams. With levels reaching up to 14 feet at Katarian Bridge, the potential for more flooding increases.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecasted more heavy rains in the coming hours, which could bring an additional 50mm of rain. Authorities have stressed the need for immediate action against illegal constructions obstructing water flow, which have been a longstanding issue that aggravates flooding.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel until the situation stabilizes. Those affected are encouraged to report blocked drains or emergencies to help facilitate effective responses from local authorities.
