Internet Slowdown in Pakistan: What You Need to Know
If you’ve been feeling the frustration of sluggish internet speeds lately, you’re definitely not alone. Reports have been flooding in from users, particularly in upper Punjab and Islamabad, about connectivity issues. It turns out, maintenance work on one of the country’s submarine cables was the culprit.
On Tuesday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) announced that repairs were needed on a faulty repeater in their undersea cable system. This wasn’t just a minor hiccup; it affected users’ internet speeds significantly, especially during a time when the law and order situation in the region was already tense. PTCL had issued a notice the day before, warning that slower speeds and intermittent connectivity were on the horizon.
The scheduled maintenance kicked off around 11 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time on Tuesday and was estimated to take up to 18 hours. During this window, customers could expect not only slower speeds but possible delays in international connectivity as well. A PTCL spokesperson expressed gratitude for customers’ patience during this crucial maintenance phase, emphasizing that such repairs are vital for long-term service quality.
Did you know that PTCL oversees three of the six submarine optical fiber cable systems in Pakistan? These systems play a key role in providing our international internet connectivity. Alongside PTCL, Trans World Associates and Cyber Internet Services manage the remaining cables under the PEACE cable network. Collectively, these systems can handle around 13 terabits per second (Tbps), while current national usage hovers between 7 and 8 Tbps. This means we’re pushing the limits of our infrastructure daily!
If you’ve been affected by these recent issues, rest assured that the repairs are meant to bolster service in the long run, ensuring a better online experience for everyone in Pakistan.
