Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s Flood Relief Efforts: What You Need to Know
The recent flooding in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has been devastating, but the provincial government is stepping up to offer significant support to those affected. Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur announced an impressive increase in compensation packages aimed at aiding families who have faced unimaginable losses due to the floods.
For starters, the compensation for families who lost loved ones has doubled from Rs1 million to Rs2 million. This substantial increase shows a commitment to providing families some peace of mind during these incredibly challenging times. Injured individuals will now receive Rs500,000 instead of Rs250,000, ensuring that medical needs can be met more effectively.
Homeowners aren’t left behind either. If a house was completely destroyed, the compensation has increased to Rs1 million from Rs400,000. Even for those with partial damage, the payout is significantly up, now sitting at Rs300,000. This is a welcome change for many who are trying to rebuild their lives. Notably, shopkeepers are now eligible for compensation, receiving Rs500,000 if their businesses were destroyed and Rs100,000 for cleaning up after being inundated.
The CM also highlighted additional support for farmers, pledging compensation for losses in crops, orchards, and livestock, underscoring the government’s dedication to a holistic recovery. To facilitate these payments, Rs6.5 billion has already been released to the Relief Department, with an additional Rs5 billion on the way. This brings the total financial commitment to a remarkable Rs11.5 billion.
The scale of destruction has been astonishing, with reports documenting over 400 deaths and thousands injured since mid-August. Some districts like Buner, Swat, and Shangla were particularly hard-hit, with many homes and vital infrastructures like roads and bridges severely damaged.
Despite these challenges, the government acted quickly. Response teams mobilized immediately once the first reports of flooding surfaced, which undoubtedly saved many lives. The swift rescue operations managed to help over 5,500 individuals, showcasing the tireless efforts of rescue personnel.
Earlier relief efforts have already begun to bear fruit, with more than 119,000 people receiving cooked meals and essential goods delivered to affected areas. Road and bridge restoration initiatives are underway, while medical camps have been established to provide necessary healthcare in impacted regions.
Additionally, compensation totaling Rs654 million has already been disbursed to families of the deceased, with money also allocated to the injured and shopkeepers. The ease of access to these funds is a priority; the CM has emphasized that compensation will be dispersed through a transparent digital payment system. Special measures are even being put in place for children who lost their parents, ensuring they receive support without unnecessary delays.
