Major Security Flaw Exposed: Hackers Hijack Instagram Accounts

A notable vulnerability in Meta’s AI support assistant allowed hackers to take control of high-profile Instagram accounts, including the White House account once affiliated with former President Barack Obama. The process was surprisingly simple for the hacker. They could trigger a password reset request through the AI assistant, which was launched earlier this year to streamline account recovery and technical support. By instructing the AI to change the registered email of the targeted account to their own, the hacker received an 8-digit verification code. Once they entered that code into the chat interface, they were able to reset the password and lock out the legitimate account owner.
This cyberattack not only compromised the Obama account but also affected other high-profile handles, including that of the beauty retailer Sephora and US Space Force Chief Master Sergeant John Bentivegna. The Obama account was briefly defaced with inappropriate content before Meta took corrective action.
