New Approach to Biometric Verification for the Elderly and Medically Challenged Citizens

Starting January 20, there’s an exciting change coming to Pakistan’s registration process that aims to help our elderly and those with medical conditions. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) is launching a facial recognition-based biometric verification system, which is especially welcome news for citizens who find fingerprint verification challenging.

We all know that as we age or face medical issues, simple tasks can become complicated. Fingerprint verification, which has been a standard protocol, can be tough for many. With this new initiative, NADRA aims to make things easier. It comes as a result of directives from the prime minister and the interior minister, reflecting a genuine effort to ensure everyone can easily verify their identity.

So, how does this work? NADRA has officially adapted its rules to include facial recognition as a valid biometric method. This means that if someone’s fingerprint doesn’t register properly, they will now have the option to visit a nearby NADRA registration center for facial recognition instead. It’s a fantastic way to ensure inclusivity in our identification processes.

What’s even more convenient is that this new feature will be incorporated into the Pak-Identity mobile application. Plans for a digital ID system mean that once launched, facial verification will be just a few taps away on your phone. Imagine not having to stand in long lines, especially for the elderly who may need additional support.

From January 20, NADRA registration centers across the nation will start issuing biometric verification certificates using facial recognition. The process is straightforward: if fingerprint verification fails, citizens will simply be directed to use the facial recognition service at their nearest center. Once verified, individuals will receive a biometric certificate, which includes their photo, national identity card number, name, and a QR code, all valid for seven days. It’s all about making identification easier and more accessible.

If you or someone you know encounters issues with this new service, NADRA encourages you to file a complaint with the appropriate institution.

This initiative not only streamlines identification procedures but also represents a significant step towards utilizing technology for the betterment of our society. As we move forward, it’s initiatives like these that foster inclusivity and ensure that everyone has access to essential services.
