The New Nawaz Sharif Flyover: A Step Forward for Rawalpindi’s Traffic
Great news for Rawalpindi residents! The Nawaz Sharif Flyover at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road is now open to public traffic after its recent completion. This overpass is a crucial addition to the area’s infrastructure, improving the flow of traffic and reducing congestion, which many of us can appreciate on our daily commutes.
Although an official inauguration was planned for June 30, it seems the ceremony has been postponed. No worries, though—the flyover is ready for use, allowing vehicles to bypass the busy intersections that often slow us down.
The construction of the flyover cost around Rs2.3 billion and is part of a larger development initiative. This includes two underpasses and an underground pedestrian walkway on Mall Road, built at a total cost exceeding Rs4.38 billion. While these projects are also completed, they remain closed until the Chief Minister announces a new inauguration date.
Officials from the Punjab Communication and Works Department are optimistic. They assure us that as soon as they receive the green light, the underpasses will open for public use, just like the flyover. It’s always nice to see these projects aimed at easing daily commutes finally come to fruition.
Moreover, Rawalpindi isn’t stopping here! There are solid plans in place for additional underpasses at Qasim Market, Race Course, and Chairing Cross on Peshawar Road. A proposal to construct two flyovers and three underpasses at Kachehri Chowk is also on the table, though we’re still waiting for the Punjab government to unveil specific timelines for these new projects.
