Youm-e-Istehsal: A Day of Solidarity and Remembrance in Pakistan

On August 5, 2019, India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, a move that sparked global concern. Every year since, Pakistan observes Youm-e-Istehsal to honor those affected by the ongoing turmoil and to raise awareness about the plight of Kashmiris. This year was no different, with nationwide rallies and events emphasizing solidarity and the call for justice.

In Islamabad, the day was marked by a significant rally that began at the Foreign Office and ended at D-Chowk. The event brought together government officials, diplomats, students, and civil society activists. At 10 AM, the entire nation paused for a moment of silence to honor the sacrifices of Kashmiri martyrs. This collective reflection underscored the emotional weight of the day.

The Islamabad Policy Research Institute hosted a seminar titled "August 5 and Beyond: Violations of International Law in IIOJK," where speakers passionately condemned India’s actions. Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed characterized India’s policies in Kashmir as a form of "Hindutva fascism" that mirrors colonial oppression. He urged the international community to take immediate action to prevent further injustices.

Former AJK President Sardar Masood Khan questioned India’s claims of development in the region, emphasizing that true prosperity would not include restricting Kashmiris from visiting their martyrs’ graves. Hurriyat leader Altaf Hussain Wani described August 5 as a day of betrayal but also expressed hope that Pakistan’s unwavering support would eventually lead to justice.

Protests and rallies were held from the snowy peaks of Gilgit-Baltistan to the urban streets of Karachi. In Gilgit, Governor Syed Mehdi Shah addressed crowds, affirming that August 5 marked a dark chapter in history due to India’s violation of international laws. Similarly, in Quetta, Peshawar, and other districts, officials condemned what they referred to as "state terrorism" and called for UN intervention.

The significance of this day extended beyond borders, with Pakistani embassies worldwide organizing events to spotlight human rights violations in Kashmir. In Tehran, Iranian scholars joined forces with Pakistani diplomats to condemn India’s actions. Meanwhile, a photo exhibition in Tokyo vividly portrayed the suffering of Kashmiris, urging international support.

As we reflect on Youm-e-Istehsal, it’s clear that the collective voice of the people grows louder each year. The message is simple yet powerful: the time for silence has passed, and the world must act before another generation of Kashmiris is lost to oppression.
