Recent Developments in Pakistan’s National Assembly: What You Need to Know

The political landscape in Pakistan is buzzing with significant developments, especially after the National Assembly regained its full strength on Wednesday. This shift was made possible when the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) distributed reserved seats in accordance with the recent ruling by the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench.

This past weekend, a 7-3 majority ruling overturned a previous decision regarding reserved seats, which had impacted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Essentially, the Supreme Court took back reserved seats from PTI and redistributed them to rival parties in both national and provincial legislatures. The distribution was favorable to the ruling coalition, where now, in a strong legislative move, they hold a two-thirds majority with 235 seats out of 336.

For instance, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) secured 10 seats, while the PML-N and PPPP received a robust share in other provinces.
