Polio: A Call to Action in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
Recently, a gut-wrenching report emerged from North Waziristan. A 19-month-old boy from Union Council Miranshah-3 became the latest victim in the ongoing fight against polio, marking the eighth case from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa this year. To put this in perspective, Pakistan has reported 14 polio cases in 2025 alone, with K-P, Sindh, Punjab, and Gilgit-Baltistan contributing to the tally.
Polio is more than just a statistic; it’s a highly infectious disease capable of causing lifelong paralysis. This is precisely why immunization is crucial. The only way to shield our children from this perilous illness is by ensuring they receive multiple doses of the polio vaccine — a necessity for every child under five during vaccination campaigns.
Unfortunately, the path to total eradication is fraught with challenges. In many southern districts of K-P, limited access and logistical hurdles hinder effective house-to-house vaccination outreach. These barriers often leave thousands of children unprotected and susceptible to this disease.
To counteract this, health authorities have been proactive. Recently, a special vaccination campaign ran in six union councils of Bannu, successfully vaccinating 17,485 children. There’s also a targeted vaccination drive on the horizon for 11 union councils in North Waziristan. But that’s just the beginning; a larger-scale campaign is set for August, targeting the southern regions of K-P.
