The Rising Cost of Essentials: A Look at Punjab’s Food Inflation

Have you felt the pinch at the grocery store lately? If you’re living in Punjab, the answer is likely a resounding yes. The prices of perishable food items have soared, leaving many families frustrated as they struggle to afford basic commodities. Despite the government’s attempts to control prices, consumers often find themselves paying far above the official rates.

Take vegetables, for instance. It’s not uncommon to walk into a local market and see A-grade soft-skin potatoes selling for Rs 140–150, while the official price is set between Rs 80-85 per kilogram. Onions are another story; they’re officially priced at Rs 50-55, yet can reach up to Rs 100 in stores. It’s hard to ignore these discrepancies when budgeting for essentials.

Poultry isn’t any better. Recently, the official price for live chicken was adjusted to Rs 374-388 per kilogram, but shoppers report paying anywhere between Rs 460 and Rs 480. Even chicken meat sales are inflated, with a fixed rate of Rs 562 being overshadowed by market prices hitting Rs 640.

If we dig into the world of fruits, the situation is no different. Apples, for instance, have an official price range of Rs 145-265, yet they can be priced as high as Rs 350 in stores. And you’d better be prepared to shell out if you’re looking for dates—officially at Rs 460-490, they can reach prices of Rs 2,000!

Why is this happening? Critics argue that the government’s price control initiatives have become little more than a formality. With new price monitoring departments in place, the lack of enforcement and accountability raises questions about their effectiveness.

As food inflation continues to weigh heavily on the budgets of low- and middle-income families, many people are losing faith in the government’s ability to manage the economy effectively. Without stronger measures and genuine enforcement, it seems those prices will keep climbing, making essentials harder to come by for everyone.
