Rana Sanaullah Elected as Senator: What You Need to Know
In a recent by-election, Rana Sanaullah from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has been elected as the senator for Punjab, securing a total of 250 votes out of 251 cast. It’s worth noting that only one vote was rejected, making this a quite decisive win for Sanaullah. Given the circumstances, this election had a bit of a lopsided feel. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chose to boycott the election, emphasizing that any participation would contradict their established party policy.
The opposition fielded Salma Ijaz, the wife of former PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry, who was disqualified following a 10-year prison sentence due to the recent anti-terrorism court decisions. This left PTI members with little option other than to sit on the sidelines.
Interestingly, the Lahore High Court recently ruled that while the process could continue regarding Chaudhry’s disqualification, its future would depend on the outcome of a separate petition. This ruling sheds light on the precarious nature of political situations in Pakistan.
Rana Sanaullah is no stranger to the political scene. He previously ran in the general elections on February 8 from Faisalabad but didn’t manage to secure a seat in the National Assembly. His political experience includes serving as the Interior Minister in the previous Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government, along with twice holding the position of Law Minister during Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure as the chief minister of Punjab.
The Senate is a key legislative body in Pakistan, composed of 363 members representing nine political parties. With the PML-N holding a majority of 229 seats, the influence it wields is significant. Other political factions include the Sunni Ittehad Council with 73, PTI with 24, and several others with fewer seats.
