December Weather Update: Rain and Snow Across Northern Regions of Pakistan

As winter settles in, Pakistan is bracing for another wave of rain and snow. From December 27 to 31, a new weather system is set to roll in, potentially bringing much-needed precipitation to parts of Punjab. Let’s take a closer look at what to expect in various regions.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, residents are experiencing some of the coldest conditions of the season. Heavy rain and snowfall have already disrupted road connectivity, making travel tricky. Temperatures in Peshawar are hovering around 11°C, and cloudy skies are expected to continue over the next day or so.

The upper areas of Dir have been receiving steady snowfall, with places like Kumrat Valley reporting up to a foot of snow! Meanwhile, the Galiyat region sees heavy rain and snow for the second consecutive day, compelling local authorities to advise against unnecessary travel. If you’re considering a trip to Nathiagali or Thandiani, be mindful that new snowfall is anticipated.

In Balakot and surrounding areas, light rain has cleared the dust, offering slightly improved visibility, although the cold remains formidable. Over in Gilgit-Baltistan, the first snowfall of the season has hit areas like Yasin and Upper Gurez, making travel conditions challenging. Authorities are urging locals to stay put unless absolutely necessary.

In Punjab, we just had a brief rain sequence. Lahore, for instance, saw cloudy conditions but no significant rainfall. However, with another system poised to enter between December 27 and 31, residents might finally get to enjoy some winter rain. Morning and night fog is affecting visibility, leading to temporary motorway closures, so be cautious if you’re on the road. Temperatures in Lahore are currently ranging from 9°C to 18°C.

Lastly, while many districts in Balochistan are freezing cold and dry, coastal areas are experiencing milder temperatures, with Gwadar and Jiwani resting comfortably at around 11°C and 12°C.
