CM Murad Ali Shah Addresses Rumors and Sugar Prices in Sindh

In a recent press meeting, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah clarified his stance on the rumors surrounding a potential division of Sindh province. Speaking at the Bhan Saeedabad Press Club in Jamshoro, he firmly dismissed the idea, emphasizing that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is committed to serving both the interests of Sindh and Pakistan as a whole. “Will anyone living in Sindh agree to dividing the province?” he posed, quickly deflecting concerns by highlighting that there’s no demand for such changes among the people.

On the topic of the much-talked-about 28th constitutional amendment, CM Murad said it’s too early to comment since no draft has been made public yet. He expressed caution about jumping to conclusions. While he refrained from discussing potential changes to the governorship, he noted that appointing a governor rests with the Prime Minister and President.

Aside from political matters, CM Murad also addressed a pressing issue that affects many in the region: rising sugar prices. He expressed concern about the escalating cost and instructed Chief Secretary Syed Asif Haider Shah to implement measures to bring down retail prices while ensuring that sugarcane farmers receive fair compensation for their crops. The sugarcane harvest began in October, but the provincial government has yet to set procurement prices for mills, which has added to farmers’ worries, especially as the crushing season is anticipated to start on November 15.

Last year posed challenges as the government opted not to set procurement prices for sugarcane or wheat to align with International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions. However, the recent announcement of a procurement price of Rs3,500 per maund for wheat has sparked optimism among farmers regarding sugarcane pricing, hoping for better support.

During an inspection of agricultural input outlets in rural areas, CM Murad reassured farmers that the government is keeping a close eye on stockpiling and inflationary trends to safeguard their interests. The message was clear: the provincial government is committed to ensuring that farmers are not only supported but also able to thrive amid economic challenges.
