The Latest Anti-Polio Campaign: A Community Triumph
From September 1 to 7, Pakistan witnessed a remarkable anti-polio campaign that successfully vaccinated at least 19.7 million children under five. This effort was a collaborative mission, highlighting the incredible work done by parents, health workers, civil officials, and law enforcement.
In this focused week, Punjab saw over 4 million children vaccinated, while Sindh led with an impressive 8.7 million. Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa contributed significantly too, with 2.2 million and 4 million vaccinations, respectively. Even cities like Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir weren’t left behind, with nearly 479,000, 112,000, and 164,000 children getting the crucial drops.
But the fight against polio doesn’t stop here. Recent reports from Environmental Surveillance detected wild poliovirus in sewage samples from Hyderabad, marking the sixth positive finding this year. This underscores the necessity for ongoing campaigns and challenges the community to remain vigilant.
The National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) praised the teamwork that made this campaign successful, calling polio teams and security personnel "heroes of the nation." And it doesn’t end with just one campaign; a follow-up drive is scheduled to start on September 15, specifically targeting 1.6 million children in South Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Bajaur, and Upper Dir.
