A Closer Look at the Rising Wave of Extortion in Our City

Recently, our city has been shaken by an alarming spike in extortion incidents. Law enforcement agencies have sprung into action, launching raids aimed at tackling this worrying trend. One notable incident unfolded at a car showroom on New MA Jinnah Road, where investigators are piecing together the clues behind a brazen firing incident.

What’s particularly concerning about this case is the method used by the suspects. Instead of relying on social media to issue their threats, they opted for a more direct approach: SMS. After firing at the showroom, they sent a chilling text that read: "This is a trailer. If you don’t pay Rs5 million by 7pm, the full film will start." This darkly creative line underscores the seriousness of the threats facing those targeted.

The focus of these extortionists seems to have broadened. Initially, builders were their main victims, but now showroom owners are also in their crosshairs. It’s reported that many traders, builders, and showroom owners have received distressing calls from both local and international numbers. Authorities are currently investigating a gang allegedly led by Ahmed Ali Magsi, believed to be behind these menacing activities.

In a separate but related effort, the Rangers have apprehended a suspected extortionist known as Qasim alias Qaso. This individual stands accused of several extortion cases and targeted killings, and is now being interrogated by the Special Investigation Unit.

Complaints about extortion scams have been flooding in. A food center owner in District Malir recently reported receiving a call from an international number demanding Rs2 million as a "party fund." That’s not an isolated incident; just yesterday, a trader in Manghopir received an outrageous demand for Rs100 million!

The fear that grips the city is palpable, but it’s crucial to remember that we can combat these illegal activities by standing together and remaining vigilant. Reporting suspicious behavior and supporting one another can create a safer environment for everyone.
