Revamping Pakistan’s Karate Program: Saadi Abbas Takes the Lead

Karachi is buzzing with excitement as former Asian champion Saadi Abbas steps up as the head coach of Pakistan’s karate team for the upcoming South Asian Games. Set to take place from April 3-11 next year, this event marks a pivotal moment for athletes and fans alike. Saadi aims to rejuvenate the national karate program, focusing on targeted training, international exposure, and optimal preparation.

From his base in Canada, Saadi knows he has his work cut out. His first goal? To understand the various training programs being used by fighters from different departments. “I want to hold discussions with departmental coaches to assess their training methods and identify any issues,” he shared in an interview. This initial step is crucial for laying the foundation for a cohesive team strategy.

As athletes prepare for an upcoming national event in October, Saadi plans to return to Pakistan soon for team selections. He envisions a 20-day physical conditioning camp to enhance fitness levels, followed by specialized training that targets specific skills. To bring in a fresh perspective, he also hopes to invite a foreign physical coach, someone he has previously collaborated with in Dubai and Canada.

Understanding the value of international competition, Saadi has set his sights on the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Riyadh later this year. Even though he doesn’t expect Pakistan to achieve medal glory just yet, he emphasizes the importance of exposure and assessment during this event. “Participation is key,” he believes. “It will give us insights into how our team is progressing.”

Saadi, who himself is nursing an arm injury, hasn’t ruled out competing at the South Asian Games. If his fitness allows, he may step into the ring while also leading the coaching efforts. His ambition extends beyond the South Asian Games; he is also looking to take the team to Georgia for the World Karate Series in January, and is in talks to host joint training camps with international fighters.

While the path ahead is filled with challenges, Saadi’s determination shines through. His commitment to elevate Pakistan’s karate program is evident, but he emphasizes the need for support from the government and the Pakistan Olympic Association. “Without proper backing, it will be tough to make significant progress,” he states.

As Saadi works to rebuild the karate landscape in Pakistan, his vision for a stronger, more competitive team offers hope for the future of martial arts in the country.
