Monsoon Season in Pakistan: What You Need to Know

As the monsoon season rolls in, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a countrywide alert. They’re warning us about heavy to very heavy rains, which could lead to flash floods and urban flooding in various regions. It’s essential to stay informed, especially if you live in affected areas.

Flash flooding is a major concern, particularly in regions like Murree, Mansehra, and several districts in Balochistan. Areas like Chitral, Swat, and even Islamabad/Rawalpindi are also at risk. The PMD has highlighted potential landslides in hilly terrains, which might cause road closures. It’s always smart to plan your travel routes accordingly during this weather.

Urban flooding could impact low-lying areas such as Lahore, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. If you’re in these cities, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on local news for updates and emergency alerts. The forecast shows rain, wind, and thunderstorms affecting various regions, including north Punjab and upper Sindh.

In the past 24 hours, some regions have already experienced significant rainfall. For instance, Karor received 37mm of rain, while other areas recorded up to 31mm and 22mm. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly the weather can change during this season. While places like Gilgit-Baltistan are sweltering in the heat with temperatures soaring to 47°C, Karachi is likely to see lighter rains and cooler temperatures.

If you’re in Karachi, expect partly cloudy and humid weather, with the chance of drizzles later in the day. Over the next few days, temperatures are expected to hover between 33°C and 35°C. It’s worth noting that light showers could also touch several districts, so don’t forget your umbrella!

As the rains continue, stay safe and be mindful of your surroundings.
