Rawalpindi Railway Station: A Snake-infested Emergency

Have you heard the latest news from the Rawalpindi Railway Station? Well, it’s pretty alarming. Workers at Platform No 6, which plays a crucial role in transporting freight from major cities like Karachi and Lahore, are facing a serious challenge: venomous snakes! Over the past week, five of these snakes have been spotted and killed at the station, prompting concern among the railway staff.

Why are snakes such a problem here? The situation stems from the platform’s ground being completely unpaved. With the onset of the monsoon season, wild grass and weeds have thrived, creating a perfect hiding spot for snakes. The grass can grow as high as three feet, making it dangerous for the workers, who not only perform routine inspections but also conduct minor repairs on trains.

The risk isn’t just a minor inconvenience either. According to union representatives from the Railway Workers Union, two workers are now posted full-time just to keep an eye out for snake activity while others carry on with their duties. This raises questions about safety practices in such a busy area, especially considering that the railway hospital is reportedly void of emergency anti-venom supplies.

Despite repeated appeals to the Divisional Superintendent to clear the undergrowth, no significant action has been taken. In fact, if any worker suffers a snakebite, union leaders have vowed to take serious legal action against the responsible authorities, emphasizing that the peak breeding season for snakes coincides with the monsoon.

As if the situation wasn’t tense enough, workers have threatened to stage protests if conditions don’t improve soon. On a more positive note, a spokesperson for the DS office has confirmed that grass-cutting operations are slated to begin shortly.

It’s crucial that railway authorities prioritize worker safety, especially in such hazardous conditions. If you’re in this area or have connections with the railway, it might be time to step up and advocate for better safety measures.
