Karachi’s Monsoon Mayhem: Navigating the Aftermath
On Wednesday, Karachi continued to face significant traffic diversions following a torrential downpour that wreaked havoc just a day earlier. With record monsoon rains claiming at least 11 lives, the city is now grappling with flooded neighborhoods, power supply disruptions, and road damages.
Sharah-e-Faisal showed signs of recovery, as crews worked through the night to clear the debris, but other areas like Korangi Crossing near Qayyumabad were still submerged, closing roads on either side. For commuters, this meant navigating unexpected detours, with vehicles being rerouted from Qayyumabad Chowrangi to Baloch Colony, and the EBM Causeway Road being closed entirely.
Numerous underpasses, including those at Tariq Road and Drigh Road, are also out of commission, forcing drivers onto service lanes while they seek alternative routes. Multiple underpasses in Nazimabad remain submerged, isolating many residents who were already vulnerable during this intense weather.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the heaviest rainfall hit areas like Gulshan-e-Hadeed and Keamari, with totals reaching a staggering 178 mm. Unfortunately, the rain brought more than just inconvenience. Tragically, lives were lost due to electrocutions and hazardous conditions. The K-Electric spokesperson expressed grief over incidents that have claimed lives, urging citizens to exercise caution, particularly around electrical installations during these storms.
In response to the ongoing crisis, Sindh’s Chief Minister declared a public holiday to allow residents to stay safe indoors, emphasizing that more rain is on the horizon. Those needing to venture out must be cautious as crucial repairs are underway in severely affected areas.
