Celebrating Resilience: Acid Burn Survivors Shine at Karachi Fashion Show
Recently, Karachi witnessed a heartwarming event that not only celebrated fashion but also the unyielding spirit of resilience. A group of vision-impaired acid burn survivors took to the runway, guided by choreographer Neera, showcasing Zubair Shah’s Summer Bloom collection during the Runway Spring/Summer ’25. The event was part of a meaningful collaboration with the Depilex Smileagain Foundation (DSF). Abdiya Shaheen, the National Coordinator & Outreach Manager for the foundation, highlighted their mission to restore confidence and visibility to burn survivors through medical and psychological support, as well as powerful storytelling. This initiative sheds light on the grim reality that acid attacks in Pakistan disproportionately target women—a staggering 90% of victims have previously faced some form of violence.
The stories behind these brave survivors underscore a harsh truth: many have endured attacks from rejected suitors or suffered life-altering injuries from domestic accidents. Despite legal provisions under the Pakistan Penal Code that aim to punish perpetrators of acid attacks, the numbers reflect a troubling trend. With official reports citing around 200 cases annually, the reality is likely much higher, as stigma often silences many of these stories.
Initially, the idea of walking the runway was met with mixed emotions. Some survivors felt hesitant, while others were cautiously optimistic. Many had never seen themselves in such a public light; however, the transformation was remarkable.
