Tensions Rise in Azad Jammu and Kashmir: A Day of Strikes and Protests

On Monday, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) experienced significant unrest as a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike, called by the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC), brought daily life to a standstill. The strike impacted major districts, including Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, and Poonch, leading to widespread closures of businesses and disruptions in transportation.

The strike’s intensity escalated at Neelum Bridge, where clashes broke out between JKJAAC protesters and supporters of the Muslim Conference, who held a parallel “Aman March” aimed at supporting shopkeepers wishing to keep their businesses open. The confrontation turned violent when shots were allegedly fired, injuring several, including a protester named Sudheer, who tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Journalist Farhan Ahmed Khan reported that the horrifying incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, amplifying the unrest. In the wake of the violent events, JKJAAC leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir delivered a powerful speech at Lal Chowk, condemning the shooting and emphasizing that they bear no malice towards state institutions.

As protests spread beyond Muzaffarabad, crowds gathered in sensitive areas, even extending to demonstrations in the UK. Raja Amjad Ali Khan, addressing the crowds abroad, stressed the movement’s focus on the rights of the people, asserting, "We have no quarrel with any institution or the Army."

Dialogue attempts between the federal government and JKJAAC had previously failed due to disagreements over constitutional amendments related to AJK assembly seats. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have promised to take legal action against anyone involved in the recent violence, emphasizing that public safety must remain a priority.

The situation remains fluid, but many are calling for an open dialogue and peaceful resolutions. If you want to stay updated on these developments and more community-centric stories, consider connecting with Pro21st for insightful discussions and resources.
