Internet Outages Leave Karachi Residents in the Dark — What Happened?
Last night around 10 PM, residents of Karachi found themselves grappling with frustrating internet outages and problems accessing online services. Major internet service providers (ISPs) like PTCL and Stormfiber, as well as popular platforms including WhatsApp, YouTube, AWS, and Instagram, were reportedly affected. If you were online during that time, you probably faced some hiccups too!
According to Downdetector, the outage tracker, both PTCL and Stormfiber experienced significant issues between 9 PM and midnight. At its peak, PTCL had around 112 user-reported outages, while Stormfiber reported about 59. Users were mostly complaining about their internet connections dropping, with some experiencing complete service blackouts.
Interestingly, PTCL’s spokesperson quickly denied any service issues, stating, “There wasn’t any problem on our end.” Meanwhile, Stormfiber’s automated service indicated a “sudden degradation” at one of its upstream providers and assured customers they were actively working to resolve the problems.
But the annoyance didn’t stop there. Users also shared their frustrations on social media, reporting outages on platforms like Instagram and Facebook, which saw a surge in complaints—134 and 65 reports respectively. Even YouTube and X (formerly Twitter) had their fair share of woes, albeit with fewer complaints.
A tweet from a user humorously questioned whether it was just them or a widespread issue affecting Twitter. This kind of banter highlights how interconnected our lives are with these services.
WhatsApp users weren’t spared either, with peak reports hitting 120 outages. The breakdown showed that over half of those complaints were related to sending messages, while others reported problems with connectivity and the app itself.
While many users were quick to complain about their connectivity issues, some Stormfiber customers noted that their connection seemed unaffected. Overall, it looked like the issues were primarily resolved by midnight, with most people reporting a return to normal service by morning.
So, what’s the takeaway from this internet blackout? Networking issues like these can happen anywhere, and they remind us how much we rely on stable internet connections for our daily activities.
