Pakistan’s Decades-Long Hospitality: A Call for Regional Peace

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently addressed the National Assembly, shining a light on Pakistan’s complex relationship with Afghanistan over the last four decades. His remarks came during the session where the 27th Amendment was approved, underscoring the nation’s commitment to fostering peace.

"For forty years, we housed millions of Afghan refugees, treating them like our own," Sharif stated. However, the toll of this hospitality has become evident, especially with rising tensions linked to terrorism. The Prime Minister extended a conditional offer to the Taliban government: cease support for terrorist factions, and together, we can pave the way for stability and prosperity in the region. He emphasized, “Our forces face daily battles, and we owe it to our martyrs to uphold peace.”

The harsh reality was tragically illustrated by recent attacks on judicial complexes and military outposts, demonstrating not just the internal challenges but also foreign interference. “Foreign actors are clearly involved in the ongoing violence, particularly through groups like TTP and BLA,” he noted, urging the international community to acknowledge these issues.

Sharif expressed gratitude for the allies who supported the passage of the 27th Amendment, stating it represents a significant step towards establishing a Constitutional Court–a long-held dream now realized after 19 years. His commitment to unity resonated as he called for collaborative efforts from all political factions to foster a more stable and prosperous Pakistan.

Wrapping up the session, PM Shehbaz encouraged a collective approach to give rise to new solutions for the challenges facing Pakistan. The nation stands at a crucial crossroads, and together with its allies, it can chart a path forward.
